Acoustic Wall Insulation

Follow our step by step guide to sound insulating a seperating wall.

Step 1

Firstly lift carpet and underlay to expose floor boards, as illustrated in Fig 1 below.

Step 2

Inspect floorboards close to wall, and seal up any gaps with silicon sealant. If any floorboards are loose or creaking then screw to secure in place.

Step 3

Expose joint between plasterboard and ceiling

Step 4

Apply thick bead of silicon sealent to any gaps

Step 5

Screw Fix 2" x 2" timber batten to ceiling leaving 20mm gap, ensuring that you are screwing into Ceiling joists as shown

Step 6

Follow instructions as per Fig 6

Step 7

Step 9

Follow instructions as per Fig 9, finally plastering the wall.

Total loss or room =112 mm approx

Allow for drying and then decorate your new wall as normal.

You have now finished your acoustic wall treatment.

Acoustic Wall Material List

  • 2&rquo; x 2&rquo; Timber Batten (Number and length as reqd)
  • 3&rquo; Wood Screws (no as required)
  • 50mm Thick Rockwool Insulation or similar (same m2 area as wall)
  • 12.5mm SoundBloc Plasterboard (2.4mx 1.2m x 12.5mm) (3 * area as wall)
  • Tubes of Silicon Sealant ( About 2 tubes per wall)

  • Cold Brick Bolster (to remove Coving)
  • Sealant Cartridge Gun.
  • Electric Hammer Drill
  • 8mm Masonary and wood drill bits
  • Flat Blade Screwdriver
  • Large Claw Hammer

  • Plasterboard Tacks
  • Plasterboard scrim tape
  • Electric spur socket if required.
  • Bag of Plaster and finishing plaster
  • Plastering trowel
